Behind that milestone, our teams in Costa Rica and Sarstedt have been working closely to prepare the facility for operations. As the cleanroom is now equipped, the focus is on transferring knowledge, establishing proven processes, and ensuring the same quality standards our customers know from MeKo. Expanding internationally is never just about opening another location. It is about bringing decades of manufacturing experience to a new team and creating the foundation for long-term collaboration. We're looking forward to sharing the next milestones as our Costa Rica facility moves closer to welcoming its first projects.

Hand someone this component, and they will almost always do the same thing: They rotate it, flex it, and try to work out how it stays together. That reaction is exactly why we made it. At first, it almost looks impossible. Every segment is completely separated from the next, yet the structure remains mechanically connected through its interlocking geometry alone. With its 25 mm diameter, the geometry becomes easy to explore by hand and even easier to understand. Interlocking designs like these are used wherever flexibility and controlled movement need to coexist, for example in steerable systems or cable-guiding applications. We regularly bring this Flextube, together with versions in smaller diameters, to trade fairs and customer meetings. It gives us a practical way to explore different cutting patterns, movement characteristics, and manufacturing possibilities long before a specific component has been designed. Choosing a manufacturing partner is not only about knowing what can be produced. It is also about understanding what becomes possible once manufacturing experience becomes part of the conversation. This Flextube was built for exactly that reason. It makes the possibilities of laser-cutting tangible, sparks curiosity, and often turns a simple "How does this work?" into "Could we use something like this for our device?"

A Nitinol component can meet every dimension on the drawing and still not behave as intended. At first, that sounds impossible. If every tolerance is met, shouldn't the component perform exactly as designed? For many implant alloys, geometry tells most of the story. With Nitinol, it doesn't. Its superelastic behavior depends on a reversible transformation within its crystal structure. And unlike geometry, that behavior isn't defined by the drawing alone. It is influenced by how the material has been processed. Every shape setting, every heat treatment and every surface-finishing step can influence the conditions under which that transformation takes place. The challenge is not simply producing the correct geometry. It is preserving the material's intended behavior while turning a tube into a functional and safe medical device. That is why experience matters. Not because Nitinol is mysterious but because understanding how laser processing, heat treatment and surface finishing interact takes years of observation , refinement and validation. Each process leaves its own fingerprint on the material. On their own, those changes may seem insignificant. Together, they determine whether the component ultimately exhibits the intended superelastic behavior, fatigue performance and reproducibility. It is this understanding that allows the finished component to perform exactly as the design intended.

"How big are your laser systems?" It was one of the questions we were asked most frequently at IdeenExpo. The answer is simple: it depends on the application. The size of the component and the required level of precision determine which laser system is the right fit. The photo, for example, shows the approximately five-meter-high storage tower of one of the sheet metal laser systems used in our MetalWorks division. For highly intricate components such as stents or heart valve frames, we rely on much smaller laser systems, many of which are designed and built in-house . This allows us to tailor both the equipment and the manufacturing process to the specific requirements of each application, from large-format sheet metal processing to micron-level precision. A MeKo bottle on a beach was all it took. A few years ago, one of our colleagues sent a photo of her MeKo water bottle from a beach in Denmark as a holiday greeting to a few teammates. It found its way into our weekly internal newsletter, and what started with one photo gradually turned into a tradition . Today, colleagues regularly send us holiday greetings featuring their MeKo bottles, mugs, shirts, jackets, and plenty of beautiful destinations along the way. From Thailand to Norway , from mountain peaks to the ocean, every picture brings a different story and a little glimpse into where our colleagues' adventures have taken them. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has shared these moments with us over the years and thank you to our colleague Annett who started this tradition. From climbing walls to country roads. One of the things we enjoy seeing at MeKo is how new activities grow among colleagues . A while ago, climbing became part of our after-work activities. Now, a group of colleagues has added bike tours to the list. Despite a rather mixed weather forecast, eight colleagues met on Saturday for the first joint MeKo bike tour . Wind, rain showers, and the closed ice cream café on the way did not stop the group. What was planned as 37 kilometers spontaneously turned into 42. A special thank you goes to Thomse, one of our laser system operators, who turned the idea into reality and organized the first tour. It is great to see colleagues share interests, stay active, and spend time together beyond the workday.

At first glance, our filter samples look like regular metal sheets. Hold them against the light, and the difference becomes visible: thousands of precisely laser-perforated holes across every square centimeter. What is harder to see is what determines performance in operation. A filter can have the right cut-off and still become the bottleneck. Flow behavior, cleanability, pressure loss, mechanical stability, service life, and even how easily a filter can be installed are all influenced by decisions made long before the first part enters the process. That is where filtration becomes interesting. Creating holes at this scale already requires high-precision laser processing . But performance is decided by how cut-off, flow, cleanability, stability, and installation work together. With FILTECH just around the corner, we look forward to discussing where specifications become process challenges.

Making technology visible is one thing. Making it understandable is another. That is why preparing for IdeenExpo GmbH is not just about setting up exhibits. It is also about the people at the booth. Yesterday marked the start of this year's STADTRADELN campaign in our hometown Sarstedt, and we're once again taking part. Whether it's the commute to work, an evening ride, or a weekend tour, the goal over the coming weeks is simple: collect as many kilometers as possible together. This year is a special one for Sarstedt, as the city is celebrating its 10th anniversary of participating. We're looking forward to a few weeks of friendly competition, fresh air, and plenty of kilometers. Let's see where Team MeKo ends up by the finish line.

Great employers never stop evolving. That is why Frank Völkermeyer, Mandy Erhardt, Katja Jacobsen, Jasmin Maaz, and Ina Stumpf from our HR team attended the NiedersachsenMetall Employer Forum in Hanover last week. Under the theme "Hanover – Breaking Free from Mediocrity," the event explored how the Hanover region can remain an attractive place to live and work in the years ahead. Topics included vocational training, employee retention, mental health in the workplace, and modern leadership. Alongside the presentations, the exchange with other companies was especially valuable. We are taking away plenty of new ideas and look forward to putting some of them into practice at MeKo.

Some of our most important work never becomes part of the final product. That’s especially true for tooling. While rarely visible to the outside world, the right tool can make the difference between a promising concept and an economically viable production process. Quietly in the background, tooling has helped shape how ideas become real components for decades. Tools were being developed and refined alongside our processes long before they were brought together in a dedicated team around five years ago. Since then, that work has grown into 1,313 tooling projects. One of the advantages of an in-house tooling team is how closely everything is connected. We don’t only just build tools in-house. We develop our processes and even our equipment ourselves, allowing tooling, process development, and manufacturing expertise to evolve together. From 3D printing to milling and turning, each tool is developed for its specific process step , supporting consistent results and reliable component quality. Simulation complements this by helping us anticipate component and process behavior before the first tool is even built. Even though the tool itself never becomes part of the final component, its impact can be seen in the precision, repeatability, and reliability with which specifications are met. This is what helps move projects forward, from first idea to reliable series production.

Yesterday was the first day of DeviceTalks Boston, and for us a particularly exciting one, as we had the chance to speak at the Engineering Theater together with our friend Dharm Patel from Wytech Industries . We were very happy to see such strong interest in the session and the many follow-up conversations afterwards. Yesterday, the MeKo team took part in the annual B2Run in Hannover , one of 22 company runs taking place across Germany. With around 240,000 participants from almost 12,000 companies nationwide, B2Run has become Europe’s largest corporate running series. In Hannover, the conditions could hardly have been better this year: perfect weather, strong support along the track, and enough motivation to reach new personal best times. What we enjoy most about events like this is seeing completely different teams and departments spend an evening together outside the usual work environment, whether running, walking, or cheering each other on along the course. A great evening and definitely a few tired legs today.

At MeKo, teamwork does not stop when the workday ends. Alongside our soccer group that had their first tournaments this year and our running club, which was represented at the Hannover Marathon last month, a new climbing meet-up has now joined the list of activities our colleagues can take part in. The meet-up is led by our production manager Susanne Waltje , who shares her passion for rope climbing and explains the key basics to get everyone started safely and confidently. Climbing is about trust, encouragement, and supporting each other step by step. The same values that shape how we choose to work together every day. Whether it is on the soccer field, during a run, or at the climbing wall, these shared activities create easy opportunities to enjoy a hobby, and get to know colleagues in a different setting.

A lot of what you see in this video starts with one simple observation: many things only really start to make sense once you hold them in your own hands. That is exactly the approach we are bringing to IdeenExpo this year. For a few days, the Hannover exhibition grounds turn into one of Europe’s largest STEM events for young people, and we are already looking forward to being part of it again with even more exhibits and interactive activities than last time. From medical device manufacturing to metal processing, we want to give visitors a closer look at the technologies and materials behind our daily work, and make them tangible in a way that sparks curiosity. And if past years taught us anything, it is that some of the best conversations start with very unexpected questions.

As we prepare for our upcoming panel discussion on design for manufacturability at DeviceTalks Boston , hypotubes are a useful example of how early design choices can shape both function and production. A change in slot pattern, spacing, or wall thickness can affect pushability, torque response, and flexibility along the shaft. The projects that stand out follow a different path. There, development and manufacturing sit at the same table early and work through the details together. Milestone by milestone, things fall into place. Not by chance, but because the groundwork was there. You can see it in the way these projects progress. Less friction, clearer decisions, and a steady sense of momentum: from first drawings to prototypes, through validation and toward series. And that’s where the satisfaction comes from. Not from a single moment, but from solving these challenges together and seeing a project grow into something that runs reliably in the end. Those are the projects that bring a smile to everyone involved.

This week, Laura Veneracion from our US team (MeKo MedTech Inc.) is back in Sarstedt, bringing insights from recent customer visits and shows, along with new perspectives across teams. And as every German knows: April is when asparagus season begins. A small team dinner followed accordingly, but somewhere between good food and even better conversations, we didn’t get around to taking a photo. So today’s picture shows a few of us right after dinner, lined up outside the restaurant for a quick group shot. Great to have you here, Laura. And we’re already looking forward to the next visit from the US.

Yesterday, 18 students joined us for a peek behind the scenes and got a first sense of what working in laser manufacturing can look like in practice. The day started with an open Q&A session with our CEO Jakob Dohse. From there, it moved into four hands-on stations: laser processing, mechanical manufacturing, material research, and shape setting. At each station, they could try things themselves. From simulating a stent procedure to creating small takeaways , the focus was on understanding how ideas turn into real components and complete assemblies, ready for use. And in between, there was time to step back and connect. Fresh crêpes made sure no one had to think on an empty stomach. What stood out most were the questions, the curiosity, and the openness to engage with technical topics. Who knows, maybe some of them will return in a few years, for an internship or something more. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our team for making the day what it was.

Our facility in Costa Rica is taking shape. Over the past months, our team on site has been building up the new cleanroom step by step. The layout is in place, with clearly separated areas, short paths, and defined access points to keep processes controlled from the beginning. Last week marked another step forward. The first cleanroom equipment arrived, from workstations and shelving to laminar flow units and the materials needed for daily operations. The next pieces are already on their way. A container from Sarstedt will be shipped soon, including our logo signs and equipment from our existing operations. It is still a work in progress, but each delivery brings us closer to opening.

Selecting the right marker size for a stent rarely happens in one step. Small changes in diameter or wall thickness can already change how markers appear in X-ray imaging. What looks fine on paper does not always translate into sufficient contrast for accurate placement during stent deployment. In many cases, this leads to multiple iterations just to answer a simple question: which configuration is actually visible enough? To make that comparison easier, we developed the MeKo marker card . It combines a Nitinol base design with tantalum, gold, or platinum markers in different diameters and strut widths. Arranged in a structured layout, the card allows direct comparison under X-ray within seconds . Its stent-like geometry mirrors how markers actually behave in a real implant. Instead of working through several prototype loops, the card reduces development time and removes guesswork early in the process. At MeKo, not every solution is part of the final implant. Some are built to support decisions before that stage. And with the marker card now available through our webshop at shop.meko.de , it can be easily integrated into early-stage evaluation.

At the ADAC Marathon in Hannover , 25 MeKo colleagues took on the challenge together, making it our largest participation to date. From first-time runners to experienced athletes, our team covered the half marathon, 10K, and relay distances with impressive energy and commitment. With around 34,000 participants and perfect running conditions, the event itself was outstanding. But what truly stood out was the team spirit along the course – cheering crowds, shared motivation, and that extra push on the final kilometers. Our relay teams crossed the finish line together , ranking 125 and 207 out of 652 teams, just minutes apart. A great result, but even more importantly, a strong symbol of what we value at MeKo: collaboration, dedication, and supporting each other all the way to the finish. We’re proud to support initiatives like this and create opportunities for our team to connect beyond the workplace. A big thank you to everyone who ran, coached, and cheered along the way.

Yesterday we the pleasure of welcoming a group of visitors to our facility in Costa Rica. Our colleagues in south america hosted a group of students from the Master of Science in Business Administration (M. Sc. BA) at Hochschule Mainz – University of Applied Sciences in Germany. It was a great exchange where we shared our experience establishing operations in Costa Rica, covering both the challenges and the practical steps involved. Always valuable to connect academia with real-world operations and exchange perspectives across regions.

“How long does it take until someone loses consciousness if breathing stops?” That was the opener of our first aid workshop with Malteser this week. Most of us were thinking in minutes. In reality, it takes around 15 seconds. After about 3 minutes without oxygen, brain cells begin to die. A short timeline, with very little room to hesitate. So we started exactly there, with CPR. Practicing it step by step and repeating the sequence until the individual actions began to feel automatic. Because in a situation like that, there is no time to think through the next move. What matters is that your hands already know what to do. From there, we shifted to what happens before things become critical. In stroke scenarios, it often starts with small signs (FAST). An uneven smile. One arm that won’t stay raised. Slurred speech. Simple observations that point to one thing: act fast. Because emergencies rarely come without warning, but they escalate quickly. And once they do, every second is already in use. This is exactly what we trained for this week, together, step by step. Let’s just say, you are in good hands here.

It travels through a narrow catheter, opens at the target site, captures a stone or foreign body, and closes again during retrieval. This Nitinol retrieval basket looks simple. The engineering behind it is not. The entire basket is formed from a single Nitinol wire that is laser cut into multiple segments, creating a continuous geometry without joints. This results in uniform mechanical behavior during both expansion and collapse. At the distal end, the segments are finished with a precise welding bead . This small feature creates a smooth, rounded tip that reduces tissue interaction and prevents the basket from catching during retrieval. The movement itself is defined by shape setting and Af setting . The basket expands at body temperature and collapses when constrained in a catheter, without hinges or mechanical linkages. Flexibility and retrieval force are determined by wire diameter, cut geometry, and heat treatment. At MeKo, we combine Nitinol expertise, precision laser cutting, and micro welding to make these interactions predictable and reproducible from prototype to series production. That’s what turns a simple wire into a functional medical device.

Development decisions are only as good as the data behind them. That is why we founded MeKo MedLab , an impartial testing laboratory that supports your projects though development, approval, and quality assurance for faster progress toward market approval. Building on MeKo’s decades of manufacturing and material expertise , MedLab provides a growing portfolio of testing services for vascular implants, delivery systems, and catheter technologies. Current capabilities include hardness testing, radial force measurement, dimensional verification, fatigue testing, and balloon-related performance tests according to established international standards. And the portfolio continues to expand: A new Track Tester will soon enable detailed evaluation of guidewires and catheters in a body-temperature water bath. Engineers can analyze bending behavior, pushability, torsional strength, guideability, and forces acting on simulated vessel walls under realistic conditions. Another important milestone is already underway. At the end of 2025, MedLab applied for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for selected testing methods, including hardness, radial force, burst and leakage testing, and dimensional verification. For International Women’s Day, we asked three of our female apprentices and students how they experience starting a career in fields that are still often seen as male-dominated. Jiye , about her path in mechanical engineering: “As a working student, I get to gain hands-on experience in many areas of engineering. This path feels absolutely right for me and I hope it becomes a natural choice for many more women.” Melina , our apprentice chemical laboratory technician: “Every day I work with formulas, concentration calculations and data analysis. Mathematics is simply part of what I do. Science and math are not about gender, but about passion and skill.” Stephanie , master’s student in medical engineering: “In my master’s thesis, I’m developing a material model for FE simulation to help make medical technology safer and more precise. At MeKo, I see every day how valuable diversity is for innovation. This month’s featured component is a PolyMediX® tube with a stent structure laser cut into it. In recent weeks, we have shared different technical perspectives on this polymer platform. Here, those aspects come together in a real device geometry. PolyMediX® covers both biodegradable and durable polymer tubes , with optional drug integration depending on the application. In this example, the drug is embedded directly into a bioresorbable polymer matrix. This month’s featured component is a little different — and still packed with engineering. Our custom-designed carabiner hook was part of our holiday mailings. At first glance, it’s a small give-away. But behind it lies a clear mechanical challenge; to create a carabiner from a single sheet of metal, with no hinges, that opens easily with the thumb yet remains form-stable over time. The hook is laser-cut from spring steel and draws inspiration from a well-known component in the MedTech world: hypotubes . Early prototypes showed just how critical the slit geometry in such designs is. To avoid local stress peaks, the final design splits the load: the main spring action comes from an open ring at the base, while the slit pattern supports the final opening motion. The result is a compliant mechanism that shows what’s possible when material expertise , smart design and cross-functional collaboration come together. And that’s exactly how we approach every project. We love a technical challenge, transfer insights across applications, and grow our knowledge with every part we manufacture. We most enjoy the tangible buzz across departments that you can feel throughout the day. These small moments strengthen relationships, boost morale, and remind us that collaboration is built not only on precision and performance, but also on human connection. A fitting way to head into the final stretch of the year together. Sweaters or treats — if you had to choose one small thing to lift the mood at work, which would it be?

This year, our MeKo team once again came together to support a local cause during the holiday season. Thanks to the generosity of our employees, we raised a total of €1,775.34 for Familien in Not Hildesheim , a foundation that supports families facing challenging life situations. The symbolic donation check was handed over during our Christmas party in Hannover. We were pleased to welcome the foundation’s founder, Pastor Smietana, and Ms. Zeuner, who shared insights into their work and its very real impact. They explained how support often starts with small but essential steps , such as helping a young man choose a suitable suit for a job interview, and can ultimately enable opportunities like starting a banking apprenticeship. We value initiatives that go beyond day-to-day work and strengthen our connection to the community around us. Contributing in a tangible and practical way makes these moments especially meaningful. The evening itself was a fitting close to the year, with good food, music, and time spent together. Now it’s time to enjoy the holiday season, take a moment to recharge, and carry that positive energy into the year ahead.

Team MeKo joined over 2,500 participants at this year’s** Orange Day Run** in Hannover. The event supports Frauennotruf Hannover e.V. and raises awareness against violence towards women and girls. Of course, our MeKo running group didn’t miss the opportunity to support this powerful initiative and enjoy an atmospheric 5 km through the beautifully lit city – with the town hall shining in orange and participants fully embracing the theme. From glowing tutus to bright jumpsuits, the creativity and joy were impossible to miss. This month, we take a closer look at a new component that brings the possibilities of microjoining into focus: our laser welding demonstrator . At first glance, it looks like a simple assembly. But it’s designed to show just how diverse — and precise — laser welding can be at micro scale. Each section highlights a different application, from joining tasks to functional movement. The demonstrator features several common seam types : circular seams, butt welds (I- and V-joint), fillet welds, and square butt joints. These are used across real-world applications like a 3D weld on a cylindrical housing, a marker weld for part traceability, and a pin weld joining dissimilar metals. Additionally, gear elements are welded just enough to rotate freely, demonstrating how functionality can be preserved through precise joining. These details aren’t just for show. They reflect real manufacturing needs in medical and precision industries, where clean seams, consistency and minimal thermal input are critical. At MeKo, we develop custom demonstrators to make our processes more tangible . This October, we take a closer look at a component that redefined vascular intervention: the drug-eluting stent . At first glance, it’s a familiar geometry: a metallic scaffold designed to reopen a blocked artery and hold it open. But it’s the outer layer that changed everything. 30 years ago, we completed our first laser-cut stent project at MeKo — back in August 1995 . That’s three decades of pushing boundaries in precision manufacturing. Three decades of evolving technologies, ideas, and partnerships. And three decades of helping improve lives, one device at a time. Earlier this year, we were reminded just how much that means: At a career fair, a mother and her daughter visited our booth. When she heard we had worked on the first stents in the mid-90s, she paused. Her daughter, once a child with a kidney condition, had received one of the earliest stents available that saved her life. Stories like these reflect why we do what we do. Behind every project is a person and behind every innovation, a potential life improved. Here’s to 30 more years of stent manufacturing.
