When a Stent Needs a Membrane

A metallic structure provides the framework of a stent, but some applications require additional functions. A polymer membrane can create a barrier, provide sealing or help guide fluid flow, depending on the device design and intended application.
Covered vascular stents are one example: a membrane can help exclude an aneurysm or seal a damaged vessel. Combining a metallic structure with a thin membrane brings its own engineering challenges. The covering needs to remain securely attached while accommodating movement and expansion of the underlying stent.
Material selection, geometry and attachment therefore need to be considered together.
Starting at COMPAMED, MeKo will present new surface-treatment samples, including a membrane-covered stent alongside examples of black marking and abrasive blasting. We look forward to showing you the samples and discussing the ideas they might spark for your applications.
